Religion has usually played a decisive role in the selection of Punjab chief minister. However, in the latest instance, both religion and caste have been the Congress leadership’s criteria to pick Charanjit Singh Channi as Amarinder Singh’s successor. In Channi, the trend of appointing a Sikh as the Punjab chief minister continues well into the 56th year. No non-Sikh has become the state CM in the last 55 years and the trend is likely to continue.
